Incorporated city and town limits in Yellowstone County
The boundaries are generally based on parcel data which is based on the USDI Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB). The GCDB is a complex measurement management system that uses a least squares adjustment of existing survey data to come up with a digital representation of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). For more information on GCDB, see the Montana/North Dakota BLM website at http://www.mt.blm.gov/cadastral/gcdb/index.html. Accuracy varies between townships and it is important to note that the accuracy of the data can't be any more accurate than the GCDB.

City limit boundaries are updated upon notification of annexations. The time period between annexation final approval and integration into the data can be up to a few weeks.
This data can be no more accurate than the GCDB data it is based on. The accuracy of the GCDB is variable. To find the digital accuracy of a GCDB township, download the township's file from http://www.mt.blm.gov/cadastral/pub/ and examine the .pgc file.
The boundary data for the city of Billings was originally obtained from the City Engineer's office in AutoCAD format. City of Laurel boundary data was digitized from a map provided by the City.
The Town of Broadview boundary is based on the Broadview Original Townsite plat.
Boundaries were based on parcel boundaries where coincident at the time. The parcels were based on USGS PLSS data in State Plane NAD83 feet.
1994-1995
Parcel data was converted to use BLM GCDB data in State Plane NAD83 Meters. City limits were adjusted to match changes in parcel data resulting from conversion.
2001
Data was converted from coverage format to geodatabase. Spatial adjustments were made to coincide with adjustment of GCDB data.
